Lowest low nears end

NEW YORK — One more game. One more game, and we then can officially put down the worst Red Sox season in history.

Hyperbole? Hardly.

The Red Sox have finished as also-rans. Seven squads have lost 100 games, led by the 111-game losers of 1932.

Doesn’t matter. This one’s worse.

The Red Sox have underachieved. The 1954 team welcomed back Ted Williams and then won only 69 games. The 1987 Red Sox returned after the one-strike-away miss of 1986 and went 78-84.

At the Birth of The Nation

Monday, April 1, 2013 will be my seventieth opening day as a Red Sox fan.

That’s because I went to my first Red Sox game on May 31, 1942.

I’ve experienced almost seventy-one years of frustration, disappointment, agony, ecstasy, fulfillment and joy.

Enough to fill a book.

Which I’ve done.

It’s called At the Birth of The Nation - My Life as a Fan of the Boston Red Sox, and in commemoration of those seventy-one years, I’m making it available as a free ebook download on April 1 and 2 when the Red Sox open the season at Yankee Stadium. You can download it at http://www.amazon.com/At-Birth-The-Nation-ebook/dp/B00A7GJ8RI.

It will also be available as a free download when the Sox open at Fenway Park on April 8th. And on April 9 and 10.

I doubt if most of you had been born when I went to that first game, so there may be some Red Sox history that you’re unaware of.

Especially as seen through a fan’s eyes.

I’m not a sports historian or a famous writer, just a long-term fan who saw men with names like Lou Lucier and Skeeter Newsome and Lou Finney and Ford Garrison and Johnny Lazor and Tex Hughson wear the Red Sox uniform. Names you may have never heard of.

Oh, and players with names like Ted Williams and Johnny Pesky and Bobby Doerr and Carl Yastrzemski and Tim Wakefield.

And I was at a few games, too – like the 1946 All-Star Game at Fenway and the sixth game of the 1975 World Series.

So, I invite you to download my book and read about the part that the Boston Red Sox played in the life of a dedicated fan.

I hope you enjoy it.

Best,

Stan Harris

p.s. There’s no catch. Well, maybe a little one. My hope is that if you do enjoy it, you’ll tell your friends about it.
