What Is Cystic Fibrosis? Cystic fibrosis is an inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system of about 30,000 children and adults in the United States (70,000 worldwide). A defective gene and its protein product cause the body to produce unusually thick, sticky mucus that clogs the lungs and leads to life-threatening lung infections; and obstructs the pancreas and stops natural enzymes from helping the body break down and absorb food. About 1,000 new cases of cystic fibrosis are diagnosed each year. More than 70% of patients are diagnosed by age two. More than 45% of the CF patient population is age 18 or older. The predicted median age of survival for a person with CF is more than 37 years. Learn more about Testing for Cystic Fibrosis. Explore all aspects of Living with CF at every stage of life. The Women's Center offers comprehensive services to victims, survivors and the general public. All services are free and confidential. The Center’s mission of preventing oppression and violence through empowering individuals to regain control of their lives and survive violence or abuse is achieved by providing direct services to primary and secondary victims, and education and outreach to the community. Our services are client-centered and strength-based. That means advocacy occurs on every conceivable level: providing individual and group counseling, emergency shelter, a specialized Shelter for Domestic Violence victims who have Substance Abuse and/or Mental Health issues, medical and legal advocacy (accompaniment to police departments and hospitals, as well as meeting with our court advocates), making the necessary referrals for substance abuse or mental health treatment, and referring them to more permanent housing and/or treatment once they leave our program. Clients are referred to the domestic violence and/or sexual assault survivor support groups that meet regularly at the agency. Survivor and empowerment groups are continuously scheduled throughout the year. |

A local charity in Lebanon, CT. Bailey’s Garden is an ADA compliant playground that is currently being built at Lebanon Elementary School in memory of our daughter, Bailey Teresa Shifrin. The initial playground design was completed in conjunction with M.E. O’Brien and Sons of Massachusetts. The playground incorporates accessible play structures for children ages 2-12. It will be comprised of accessible ramps in order to enable all children to utilize slides, swings, seesaws, games, and gather in common areas for socialization, as well as provide parallel play for children on various climbers and “overhead events” (gliders, etc.). The main focus of the playground will be the central meeting area that overlooks a large garden (“Bailey’s Garden”) where children of all abilities can gather and play. The overall cost of this project will run upwards of $200,000-$250,000. Bailey Teresa Shifrin was born on May 3, 1997 with Trisomy 18, or “Edward’s Syndrome.” While she was not expected to survive birth, she lived nearly seven years and passed away on March 16, 2004. Her life was truly beautiful and impacted many people. She continues to affect those who knew her, and serves as an example of God’s love. She was unable to speak or walk, but clearly communicated her love for all and her enjoyment of life. In her memory and in her spirit, we have decided to pursue building a fully accessible, ADA compliant playground to be called “Bailey’s Garden.” Courtesy of the Shifrin family. |

Our revolutionary initiative has two key goals: * To recruit one million healthy women of every age and ethnicity, including breast cancer survivors and women at high-risk for the disease, to partner with breast cancer researchers and directly participate in the research that will eradicate breast cancer once and for all. * To challenge the scientific community to expand its current focus to include breast cancer prevention research conducted on healthy women. Join us in this movement that will take us beyond a cure by creating new opportunities to study what causes breast cancer—and how to prevent it. This is an opportunity for women in all stages of life to participate in research studies. If you meet the study criteria and are interested in taking part, the Army of Women staff member will let you know what you need to do next. |

Tay-Sachs disease is a genetic, degenerative neurological disease caused by a single gene mutation. The gene mutation results in the brain being unable to properly remove waste from individual brain cells. The cells swell with waste, malfunction and ultimately die. The degenerative nature cause a person affected with Tay-Sachs disease to continually lose mental and physical functionality. Tay-Sachs disease is always fatal in children. The Cure Tay-Sachs Foundation is a tax exempt 501(c)(3) charity that was created in June 2007 by the parents and friends of Tay-Sachs children to advance the research to find a treatment and cure for Tay-Sachs disease. Our mission is to raise funds to support research that shows promise to treat or cure Tay-Sachs disease. Since our inception we've raised over $900,000 and funded research in Boston College, New York University, Harvard Medical Center, Auburn University, University of Massachuttes, Sick Childrens Hospital in Toronto, and Cambridge England. We raise money though grass roots fundraising and we've recent donations from all 50 US states and 8 different countries.
